HI ORION! HOW ARE YOU TODAY? HOW IS LIFE IN QUARANTINE?

Strange time to be alive, huh? I don’t think I ever imagined a pandemic to be in the cards. Life in quarantine has taught me a lot more than I expected, especially since I live alone. Too much time to reflect and even more time to navigate those thoughts. Outside the sudden feeling as though I’ve aged twice the speed in these short 6 months, I feel fantastic.

POET, FASHION ICON, YOUTUBE SENSATION, AND ARTISTIC CREATOR. YOU SEEM TO DO IT ALL. TELL US ABOUT YOUR JOURNEY AND HOW YOU CAME TO BE THE WONDER WOMAN THAT YOU ARE TODAY.

I always tell this story in short, but it’s inevitable that as a child you are approached with the question, “What do you want to be when you’re older?”and I found that my answer always changed. Plagued with the idea that life is subjected to one path, I knew deep down that it never quite sat right with me. I wanted to be everything at once and somehow find the time for it all. So naturally, it began with picking up my best friend's camera at 16 and sharing snippets of my life with strangers on the internet. Luckily, I was able to attract an audience around all of the things that I love. A world in which being ‘everything’ felt rewarding. Writing, design, and fashion had always a passion of mine, but I never knew that there was space for it until I created one all for my own, which is why it inevitably came later down the road. I am eternally grateful for this life of mine in which indecisiveness is a part of accepting growth, which is why I’m proud to admit that I’m still learning.

WHAT HAS YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE WITH MENTAL HEALTH BEEN LIKE?

I struggled with my mental health pretty early on, I just didn’t know how to handle it correctly. Growing up as a first generation American in a predominantly white town on top of tackling my raging teenage hormones, lack of confidence, sexuality, and family troubles at home, there was no doubt that I dealt with suicidal thoughts. Most of it stemmed from truly believing I could never be good enough. Good enough to fit in and good enough to achieve my immigrant parents dreams of what success looks like to them.

To spare the details of my angsty adolescence, as an adult, I’ve learned to take my mental health much more seriously. Therapy has been the greatest gift I’ve given myself. Letting go of society's entrenched beliefs in antidepressants has too been a gift. I’ve allowed myself the liberty in asking for help when I need it. I’m finding freedom in vulnerability and being okay with not being okay.

"Letting go of society's entrenched beliefs in antidepressants has too been a gift. I’ve allowed myself the liberty in asking for help when I need it. I’m finding freedom in vulnerability and being okay with not being okay."

HOW IS YOUR WORK-LIFE BALANCE? WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED OVER THE YEARS ABOUT SELF CARE AND MENTAL HEALTH WITH A BUSY SCHEDULE? HOW HAS QUARANTINE CHANGED ANY OF THIS?

Quarantine definitely helped shape the way that I view my relationship with work and mental health. I think as an artist it’s easy to feel an overwhelming amount of guilt when you aren’t creating anything, or have little inspiration to go off of. I’ve learned that it’s okay to have days off. Our culture has ingrained this idea of “hustle and grind” in order to make something of yourself, but there’s something to be said about the quiet moments. The ability to allow yourself to take a step back and breathe is a powerful tool when it comes to your craft and I wish I had allowed myself that simple pleasure much sooner.

YOUR VLOGS SHARE A COMMON THEME OF RAW AUTHENTICITY AND VULNERABILITY. HOW DID YOU GET TO A PLACE OF SUCH CONFIDENT HONESTY, WHILE AT THE SAME TIME NOT CLAIMING TO HAVE THE ANSWERS TO EVERYTHING?

That’s a beautiful question - and I think the answer is truly understanding that it’s okay to be human.  Vulnerability is something that I’ve always struggled with. It’s easy to sit in your room and sulk away with the excuse of not wanting to burden others with your worries, yet, every person that I’ve ever admired gained my adoration through their humble act of true authenticity. Allowing yourself the confidence to share your hurt can feel scary, yet at the same time, unbelievably cathartic. The opportunity I’ve been given to do that is not only for the sake of my own peace of mind, but also if there is ever a chance where someone else can consume my work and truly know that they’re not alone. There isn’t a rule book when it comes to life and although it’s easy to question everything, the moment you accept that you don’t know all the answers, it makes living much more enjoyable.

YOUR OPENNESS ABOUT BEING BISEXUAL IS INSPIRING TO ALL; ONE LOOK AT THE COMMENTS SECTION IN ANY OF YOUR VIDEOS SHOWS HOW INFLUENTIAL AND INSPIRING YOUR CONTENT IS TO BOTH LGBTQ+ AND HETEROSEXUAL IDENTIFYING PEOPLE ALIKE. WHAT MAIN MESSAGE DO YOU HOPE THAT PEOPLE TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR CANDID AND PROUD DIALOGUE ABOUT SEXUALITY?

Understanding sexuality, especially when it’s your own, comes a very coming-of-age time period where confusion is predestined. My biggest lesson from the years of questioning who I am and how far my love can stretch was that you must abide by your own time. Use the questions that keep you up at night as a tool to learn more about yourself.  Talk about it when YOU feel safe. Come out when YOU feel comfortable. Never pressure yourself into believing that you must be a certain age or act a particular way in order to “prove” who you are to others around you.

FOR THE MADHAPPY MENTAL HEALTH DAILY SERIES, YOU SHARED THREE SAGACIOUS TIPS TO KEEP A HEALTHY RELATIONSHIP WITH SOCIAL MEDIA: LIMITING TIME ON IT, NOT LOOKING FOR THINGS YOU DON'T NEED TO KNOW THE ANSWER TO, AND POSTING ABOUT AND FOLLOWING INSPIRING THINGS, NOT NEGATIVITY. IN QUARANTINE, HAVE YOU BUILT ON OR ADDED TO THIS LIST? HAS IT BEEN HARDER TO LOG OFF WHEN NECESSARY?

I think the only thing I’d add to that list is being earnest with the thoughts you choose to share online and carrying them into your day to day life. I say this because we’ve experienced a strong wave of activism over the course of the past few months and it's been easy to roll my eyes at some of the performative activism I’ve witnessed. I would like to hear these conversations being had in person, not just a resharing of a story. I want to believe others genuinely care about the things they say online so that real change can truly be made. Because of that, it has been much harder to log off simply due to the fact that I want to keep up and make sure that I’m using my large platform for the better good.

POETRY TALK. WHEN DID YOU FIRST START WRITING? WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION? HOW DID YOU FEEL AFTER BEING PUBLISHED?

I began taking my writing seriously after my high school literature teacher taught a lesson in Romanticism. I remember reading Byron’s “She Walks in Beauty” and understood in that moment that there was something so tangible about longing and the act of being truly tender. Poetry felt innate rather than a school assignment. That’s where I found a home for my heartbreak - pulling inspiration from scenarios in my past and slapping a title on it. It has always been in my nature to romanticize my life and I think all poets can agree that there’s beauty to be found in mundane moments.

When it came to publishing ‘Flux’, was I overcome with terror.  It’s easy to assume you’ve said too much or not enough, fearing feedback that completely discredits all the emotions you’ve allowed yourself to feel. Because all we really want in life is to be understood, right? Yet at the same time, there was a moment where all of those worries washed away, a weight was lifted off my shoulders, and an obvious enlightenment was made known that publishing that work was exactly what I needed. A finale to a chapter in my story that no longer served my future.

AND LASTLY, WHAT ARE YOU FEELING OPTIMISTIC ABOUT?

I’m feeling optimistic about the way in which my generation is shaping the next generations to come, along with the difficult conversations we are having and the work we are putting in. It makes me hopeful that my future children and my children's children can live in a world where justice has been served and topics like the acceptance of sexuality and anti-racism isn’t something that we are fighting for, but something that the world can advocate without argument.

"It makes me hopeful that my future children and my children's children can live in a world where justice has been served and topics like the acceptance of sexuality and anti-racism isn’t something that we are fighting for, but something that the world can advocate without argument."
