On Sunday, we had holistic nutritionist and wellness advocate Bianca Valle on to chat about the mind-body connection as our fourth installment of Thinking of You. 

Bianca Valle has her own nutrition practice that is two pronged - she works with individual clients and has a donation based practice. Everything over the phone. She also has a zine “A Note on Wellness” that she hand wrote and illustrated that features recipes, grocery lists, her philosophies, etc printed on 100% recycled paper. 

We started off with an exercise where we closed our eyes and made a list of five people we love. Then she asked, how many of us listed ourselves?! (Spoiler: most of us did not!) If you did, you are truly connected in your mind-body-spirit. We should be putting ourselves first right now!

Holistic nutrition is a practice that isn’t just about food or health, but about connecting every part of your being to be able to function at ease or with peace; to always fall back on love. 

Bianca’s philosophies stem in noticing what things are uplifting or putting us down. She emphasizes that we always want to move towards what lifts us, remaining optimistic, going after what brings us up. This could be eating fruits and veggies, or reading your favorite book, finding a new hobby. Allowing yourself to follow what makes you happy and discovering new things, in food and in life. 

Things that bring us down those that have a low vibration. Things like: junk food, excess, and fear. One of her favorite ways to notice when we are doing something that is bringing us down is this feeling of “grasping”. If you find yourself grasping towards a person, or material object, or uncertainty - release it. Turn it around; think about what you have and how that can heal you. When we change our mind set in this way, we can start making overall healthier choices for our mind, body, and spirit. 

So, when it comes to food specifically… 

Navigate towards foods that give back!

Food is a symbiotic relationship! You don’t want to date someone where you are giving 80% and getting 20%, right? Food is the same way! Find food that gives to you, as much as you give to it. Food with vitamin, nutrients, minerals, water, fiber bolster us to a higher level of health and a higher level of happiness. 

When it comes to quarantine in the kitchen, Biacna urges you to take a moment to get quiet with yourself and ask yourself, “what do I feel like putting in my body that is going to lift me up? What do I feel like eating?” Being honest with yourself and consistently asking yourself these questions can really help to connect with yourself, and strengthen your mind-body connection. 

Pay attention to where you live, what you’re eating, where it's made - all of these can affect your microbiome. We need different nutrients and diets depending on where we are and what our daily lives look like. Listen to your own body! Look inward. If you don't want juice this morning, don’t have one! It's as simple as that!

"Block out the outside, look inward, and try to pick things that call to you. You can do this by listening to your inner bell."

All of us have love, kindness, and an inner bell. One of our goals should be to hone in to our inner bell. It's the one that rings when something charms you, lifts you, makes you glow. If you pay attention to those clues, it becomes easier and easier to become connected.

For example, Bianca doesn't have a morning routine! She doesn't force anything; she does what comes naturally each morning. Sometimes she wants coffee, sometimes hot water with lemon, sometimes she wants both, and sometimes she wants neither. Each morning is different, and she makes a point to listen to herself in the present, rather than getting wrapped up in the motions of a routine. 

Not having a routine isn't bad! Sometimes if we have a routine and are forcing an agenda on ourselves, it can separate our mind-body connection. By forcing a relationship, routine, work out, agenda, etc. you continue to distance that connection. Instead, take a deep breath, release your jaw, release your stomach, follow your bell and intuition. 

To take this further, Bianca doesn’t have an issue with intermittent fasting, but minds when something is forced. If you start half of your day fasting and your body is mad at you, and it's weak, and you're cranky, and asking for food: listen to it. At the end of the day, ease is eliminated with stress. Eating too much is stressful and eating too little is stressful. Ease is this homeostasis, it’s balance. Finding that balance takes love, self work, and wanting to feel your best and wanting to thrive. 

Always have “ease” at your goal or the center of what you want to achieve.

Strive for ease, optimism, happiness, peace, high vibrations, sky's the limit!

SO, WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR WHEN TRYING TO NOTICE WHAT OUR BODIES WANT?

A notice of a calling or being lit up. Practice by going to your kitchen and see what your body wants most. Not thinking “what should I have”, but “what do I want that will lift me, that has nutrients that are beneficial, that has high vibrations? What food in the kitchen loves me just as much as I love it?” Look for what foods act as a mutually beneficial relationship to you. - those are the cues.

HOW DO YOU PRACTICE SELF CONTROL WITH SNACKING?

One of the foundations of wholeness, oneness, ease, and peace, is balance and equilibrium. You have to cultivate enough self worth to have a snack and say “you know what? I’m satisfied.” Practicing satisfaction and being grateful are things that take practice. We are so lucky to have a kitchen and food, we don’t need to scramble and grasp at our snacks. It’s quite primitive to let that instinct arise. We all have it, don't be ashamed of it, but recognize it. Our innate instinct is to eat the whole big bag of chips, kind of in a panic mode, mindless, with the TV on… when we do this, our mind-body connection is destroyed and we’re left to think “why did I just shoot myself in the foot?”

We’re modern humans, we have dreams and aspirations, we don't need to do that! We know what is best for us!!!!! 

Bianca always says “exercise a little bit, often”. It will lift us up, get endorphins flowing, and help to detoxify. So, having a little discipline to get yourself motivated to do what you know is going to feel good for your body. 

Always choose yourself.

When you do that and put your desires first, you are more at ease and have more peace in your mind, that leaves more room to give or teach or grow or learn. Really strive to listen to your own body, always walk towards peace and ease, and remain optimistic. 

If you are grasping at a job, relationship, goal and trying too hard to make it fit, you're just pushing it further away. If you fight the good fight with something and it's just not working for you  or coming together, then unclench it and release it. You may not have gotten that job because the universe wanted something better for you! Trust the process and enjoy the journey.  

Be easy on ourselves and try to look on the bright side. Have faith and trust that looking on that bright side will accumulate. Continuing to make beneficial choices and lifting yourself up will only benefit you in the long run. 

We all left Bianca’s live with a new ideology of loving ourselves.
